JOURNAL OF NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT

Special Issue on

Managing Mobility and Mobile Computing Systems

Guest Editors: Bernhard Neumair (University of Munich) Rene Wies (TTI TECTRAN GmbH) During the recent years Mobile Computing has become a very important trend in the usage of computing systems. The advantages of mobility and the increasing availability of adequate hardware and software have promoted the development and deployment of wireless LANs. Furthermore, with greater distances being bridged by corporate networks, and with world-wide network access, mobile computing systems can be increasingly used almost anywhere and any time without a restriction on the available services (e.g., mail, WWW, etc.). Managing these mobile systems, the related services, data, and networks as well as managing the mobility aspects of users (e.g., location of home directories, applications, etc.), however, are still unsolved problems. This special issue is intended to address these issues and to provide hints for future directions. The focus of this special issue will be on, but is not limited to, the following topics: o Applicability of existing management concepts, tools, platforms, architectures, etc. to mobile computing o New concepts, tools, and protocols needed for the management of mobility and mobile computing systems o Aspects of dynamic management domains and management policies incorporating mobile computing systems o Management requirements imposed by new services and applications, and new techniques supporting mobility (e.g., replicating file systems, caching strategies) o Management requirements imposed by new technologies and standards (Wireless LANs, HIPERLAN, IEEE P802.11, Mobile IP, etc.) o Change and configuration management for mobile systems (dynamic configuration, downloading and customizing configurations), and integration aspects o Security and accounting aspects for mobile systems o Managing and integrating PDAs Instructions to Authors: Please submit four copies of your manuscript, not exceeding 20 double-spaced type-written pages, to one of the Guest Editors (postscript files by e-mail are also welcome). Please prepare manuscripts according to the Instructions to Contributors which can be found in any copy of the Journal.
