Abstract
This paper describes the development of an industry-standard application programming interface (API) which provides access to both the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Common Management Information Service Element (CMISE) and the Internet Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) through a single set of C language function and type definitions. This paper presents an overview of the X/Open Management Protocols (XMP) API -- its purpose, architecture, and syntax -- and describes results from an experimental API prototype effort performed at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), where this API was used to support the NMA OSS-SONET NE trial.
