Abstract
This paper describes work carried out at University College London to
evaluate the use of Mobile Agents (MA), written in Java, in network and
system management. The work draws on experience from conventional
management systems based on ISO Common Management Information Protocol
(CMIP) and Internet Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). These
systems make use of the concept of a Managed Object (MO). The paper
describes the way in which the MO concept has been translated into a form
suitable for MA-based management and how the features of the Java language
may be used to express management information and to implement MOs. A
platform has been implemented which allows MOs to be instantiated,
controlled and stored and accessed. The platform also allows the easy
production of MAs, their launching into the system and their subsequent
management. Details of the platform implementation are given and an initial
assessment of performance is presented.
